Can iPhone read NFC tags?
Yes — every iPhone from the iPhone 7 (2016) onward reads NFC tags, and no app is needed. On iPhone XS and later it works automatically: wake the screen and hold the top edge of the phone near the tag. A notification appears, tap it, and the link opens. It takes about two seconds.

How it works on each iPhone
iPhone XS, XR and newer (2018+)
Reads automatically in the background. Wake the screen, hold the top edge near the tag — a notification appears. No app, no settings to enable.
iPhone 7, 8, X (2016–2017)
Reads with the built-in NFC Tag Reader in Control Center (iOS 14+): open Control Center, tap the NFC icon, hold the phone near the tag.
iPhone 6s and older
No NFC tag reading. These phones predate Apple's NFC hardware for tags.
Reading vs writing — two different things
Reading a tag is instant and app-free. Writing your own link onto a blank tag is where iPhone needs help: Safari can't do it, so you use a free app once (a 90-second job — see how to write an NFC tag on iPhone). Android phones can write right from the browser with our free NFC writer.
Common questions
▸Do I need an app to read NFC tags on iPhone?
No. On iPhone XS and newer, reading is built into iOS — hold the top edge of the phone near the tag and a notification opens it. An app is only needed for writing tags, not reading.
▸Where is the NFC reader on an iPhone?
The NFC antenna sits at the top edge of the phone, near the rear camera. Hold that area flat against the tag — not the middle or bottom of the phone.
▸Nothing happens when I tap the tag — what's wrong?
Check four things: the screen must be awake and unlocked; hold the top edge (not the center) on the tag; remove thick or metal cases; and make sure it's an NTAG-type tag, not a hotel key card or access badge (those use different chips phones can't read).
▸Can iPhone write NFC tags too?
Yes, but not from Safari — writing requires a free app like NFC Tools. Reading is instant; writing takes a one-time app install. Android phones can do both right from the browser.
